Child Acupuncture

Questions: Can children have acupuncture? What conditions/symptoms can you assist with?

Answer: Children have been treated with Acupuncture and Herbal Medicines for thousands of years.

Acupuncture treatments for children are quick and there is minimal pain. The needles are very fine, there is a quick in and out insertion and we only use between 1 and 4 points. Babies as young as a few weeks old can be treated. Once a child reaches around 5-7 years of age the needles may be retained for up to 5 minutes. We usually treat children sitting on the parents lap or on the treatment table if they feel comfortable.

Herbal medicines come in a granule form, which is dissolved and then taken. Often formulas are sweetened with stevia, a natural sweetener. It can be dissolved into water, juice, milk, yoghurt and any other creative way you can think of to disguise the taste if necessary.

We may also offer diet and lifestyle advice. Chinese medicine has a particular way of looking at diet that is different to western nutrition. However, it can work brilliantly!

Some childhood ailments we commonly treat include: digestive problems (constipation, diarrhea, tummy aches and pains, colic, wind and fussy eaters), immune weakness (constant colds/flus, chronic coughs, recurrent ear infections, recurrent upper respiratory infections, UTIs, asthma), Skin conditions (eczema, and rashes), sleeping problems, ADHD, troublesome teething, and more.

For acute problems only one or two treatments may be required. However, there can be underlying deficiencies that can be strengthened and improved. This process takes longer, usually a month or two.
