Suffering from allergies? Reduce your symptoms through detox…

Detoxing can help boost energy, improve digestion and lose a few unwanted kilos. But did you know it may also help with your allergy symptoms?

What is detox?

Detox (or detoxification) is what your body does naturally to neutralise or get rid of toxic or unhealthy substances.

Why detox?

Detoxing is a great way to support your immune system without having to ‘pop a pill’. This is because, when we clear toxins from our bodies, we’re reducing the load on our detoxification pathways, which helps us cope with allergies and other conditions better.

How can detoxing benefit people with allergies?

You might wonder how your stomach can affect allergy symptoms like sneezing or itchy skin, so let’s take it back a step. The main organs of detoxification are the kidneys, liver and bowels and when these are under-functioning we place a far greater burden on the lesser organs of elimination, like the sinuses and the skin.

Our immunity also starts in our digestive tract, so if it isn’t functioning correctly our immune system’s ability to fight allergies will also be compromised.  This is because, when our stomach becomes overloaded (and under active), the bad bacteria outweighs the good, which lowers our allergy response and makes it harder to absorb nutrients from food. Undigested, fermented food in the digestive tract also raises histamine (link to blog) levels, which we know triggers allergy symptoms (this is why we take so many anti-histamines when we feel sick!).

What symptoms may detox help reduce?

  • Difficulty losing/gaining weight
  • Nasal congestion and sinus problems
  • Chest congestion
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Brain fog or difficulty remembering things
  • Mood problems (depression, anxiety, or anger)
  • Sleep problems
  • Joint aches
  • Muscle aches
  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Changes in your skin (acne)
  • Eczema and dermatitis
  • Changes in digestion or bowel function
  • Constipation, bloating and diarrhoea.

Why should you only detox under the guide of a qualified practitioner?

One of the biggest complaints about detoxing it that people feel worse while on one. However, detoxing, when done correctly, should produce very minimal negative side effects. And this is why they should be done under the care of a qualified naturopath who can assess your needs and tailor the program to suit you as an individual.
