What is natural rubber latex?

Natural rubber latex is made from the sap produced by the Hevea Brasiliensis tree and is refined to manufacture products such as:

  • Bandages
  • Baby bottle teats/dummies
  • Rubber bands
  • Clothing elastic
  • Rubber toys
  • Rubber grips
  • Gloves
  • Balloons
  • Condoms
  • Medical equipment
  • Natural chewing gum

Though used for similar purposes, natural rubber latex differs from synthetic rubber, which is made from petrochemicals and does not contain latex proteins (1).

Symptoms of latex allergy

Commonly known as eczema, contact or irritant dermatitis is the most common reaction to latex. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and may include one or more of the following:

  • Dry, irritated or cracked skin
  • Lesions
  • Itching
  • Hives or welts (Urticaria) – after direct contact
  • Swelling (often when the lips, face and tongue are involved)
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Headache
  • Reddened, itchy or watery eyes
  • A sore throat or hoarse voice
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Chest tightness, wheezing, or shortness of breath (asthma)

Symptoms of contact dermatitis are often made worse with sweating or friction under rubber gloves, or from frequent hand washing with harsh soaps (2).

What causes latex allergy/reactions

Frequent exposure is thought to be the most likely source of latex allergy (1). So, you’re more likely to develop an allergy to latex if:

  1. You work in healthcare or frequently wear latex gloves (e.g. hospitality)
  2. Have had multiple surgeries

People with other allergies, such as food sensitivities or hay fever (allergic rhinitis) (3), may also be more susceptible.

Latex Allergy Foods

For people with latex allergy foods may also trigger reactions due to the dietary profilins they both contain. When you have a latex allergy, your body can recognise the dietary profilins in these foods and react to them like you react to latex.  These foods are known as latex cross reactive foods.

Latex cross reactive foods include:

High

  • Banana
  • Avocado
  • Chestnut
  • Kiwi

Moderate

  • Apple
  • Carrot
  • Celery
  • Papaya
  • Potato
  • Tomato
  • Melons

Natural Latex Allergy Treatment

At Health & Wellness Australia & Auckland, our Naturopaths use a form of muscle testing (kinesiology) to help pinpoint your individual triggers, like latex. Following this, we perform a natural latex allergy treatment called Positive Association Technique (PAT), which aims to reduce your reactions and symptoms.

PAT is a non-invasive holistic therapy, which:

  • draws on acupressure and kinesiology techniques
  • aims to re-train your body
  • may reduce your reactions to environmental allergens that may be causing or exacerbating your symptoms.

Some cases can be complex, so our Naturopaths may also recommend supplements and herbs, and provide lifestyle advice to help you achieve the best long-term results.
