Benefits of Bone Broth for Allergy Sufferers
Whether you heard about it from the barista at your local paleo cafe, your Naturopath or your great-grandmother, it’s not hard to be impressed by the benefits of bone broth. Here are five reasons why allergy sufferers should love it!
It helps heal the gut lining
One of the major benefits of bone broth is that it can reduce intestinal inflammation and promote overall digestive repair. This is because it’s easy to digest and rich in gut healing compounds like amino acids – proline, glutamine and glycine – and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including glucosamine. Glycine, in particular, has been shown to improve gastric acid secretion. This may reduce the symptoms of reflux and IBS, and promotes optimal liver function[1].
Bone broth is also especially useful for healing the mucosal layer of our digestive tract. So something as simple as drinking bone broth can become part of what we call a ‘heal and seal’ technique for leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut can be especially problematic for people with chronic food sensitivities and allergies. These people may need to work on gut repair to interrupt the snowball effect of food intolerances and to reduce the potential risk of associated autoimmunity.
2. It helps boost immunity
Bone broth is well-known aid in the recovery of health and strength after illness or injury (think grandma’s chicken soup), a time when you’re particularly susceptible to developing allergies and sensitivities. This is because it’s rich in proteins and minerals that can help strengthen your immune system. In fact, studies have shown that people with autoimmune disorders can experience great relief (or total remission) of their symptoms when drinking bone broth[2].
3. It promotes growth and repair of skin, hair, nails and more …
The gelatin and collagen in bone broth supports the growth and repair of skin – which can be especially beneficial for those with eczema and dermatitis – as well as hair, nails, connective tissue and joints. The GAGs found in bone broth can also increase the collagen made by the body. These may promote recovery, strengthen vulnerable joints (like knees and ankles) and reduce pain and inflammation.
In fact, there are some well-known athletes, including LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Cooper Cronk, who regularly tout the benefits of bone broth. “I’ve been doing the bone broth for a while now,” Bryant told ESPN.com. “It’s great — energy, inflammation. It’s great.”
4. It’s a nutritional replacement for commercial stock cubes or powder, which can trigger sensitivities
Commercially available stocks do not add any nutritional value, are high in salt and can contain MSG/glutamates, which may cause headaches and behavioural problems in some people. One of the benefits of bone broth is that it is also cheaper and healthier than the stock you buy in store – so making it yourself can actually save you money.
5. It adds essential minerals to your diet
In a typical Western diet, essential minerals are often overlooked and can be in relatively short supply due to modern-day food processing techniques and compromised digestive systems. Bone broth is high in essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sulphur, which many people with allergy-related symptoms, are deficient in. Among other things, these minerals can promote bone health as well as healing in general.

Need more support for your allergies? Discover our Natural Allergy Treatment!
At Health & Wellness Australia & Auckland (HWA), our Naturopaths use a form of muscle testing (kinesiology) to help pinpoint the substances triggering your child’s allergy symptoms. Following this, we perform a natural allergy treatment called Positive Association Technique (PAT), which aims to reduce their reactions and symptoms.
PAT is a non-invasive holistic therapy, which:
- draws on acupressure and kinesiology techniques
- aims to re-train your body
- may reduce your reactions to food and environmental substances that may be causing or exacerbating your symptoms.
Some cases can be complex, so our Naturopaths may also recommend supplements and herbs, and provide lifestyle advice to help you achieve the best long-term results.
